Yakuman? Baiman?

Ξ May 23rd, 2010 | → 0 Comments | ∇ garthe nelson |

We were a little tired after driving all the way from Tokyo to get rained out of Chehon’s live outdoor performance. So a little nap in the car turned into all the way to dinner. We didn’t make it to JangQ until after a couple beers.

I won the first game handily and then had in interesting hand early in the second game too.

Third hand of the east round in the south seat, after 6 draws I was already one away from ready with this monster:

345(red)5東東東南南南西西北

There were already 2 北 out and 1 西 but I was still planning on waiting for the last of either if I could pon or draw the other. When I drew another 4 it seemed time to give up on the limit hand.

With totally suspiscious discards in the characters and dots I decided not to reach. My very next draw was the 3!

Concealed Self Draw, East, South, Double Run, Half Flush, red dora: 4000/8000.

It gave me a pretty good lead until 4 hands later when Jenn reached, the dealer reached after her, and then she threw his winner of 18,000 points.

DOH!

Well, guess there’s nothing for it but to head right back as soon as they open today!

チャンピオンズリーグ:もったいない

Ξ May 17th, 2010 | → 0 Comments | ∇ garthe nelson |

sigh

Special League – 2nd session

Ξ May 16th, 2010 | → 0 Comments | ∇ garthe nelson |

Well I finished with a positive 20 which isn’t so bad except that again it should have been more.

special league score

In the second game, the second to last hand of the South round,  after Kawai had reached, I chied to be waiting for the 4-7 of dots, except that I could only win on the 4 or I’d have no hand point. Then I drew the first South tile I could see. I had a positive score and still my turn as dealer on the last hand. There was no reason to throw that tile but I did anyway and it cost me 5200, pushed me into negative territory, and gave me a lousy lead-in to my turn as dealer. No surprise it ended quickly and I had a minus 3.4 for that game.

On to the last game, Kawai reached early again on the second to last hand. I drew another West to go with the West in my hand and the two Souths I already had. The hand was looking like a good shot at 4 triples and two Value Tiles but for the love god Garthe! There was a reach. I threw the first East, which looked suspicious after all his discards were middle tiles except for the reach tile which was another West. Of course he had a 7 Pairs hand and was waiting for that East.

That pushed me under and gave me a negative for that game too. So not only did I lose points on those hands but I gave myself negative placing bonuses too.

What a waste.

My favorite hand was this one, second hand of the first game, my turn as dealer, dora was 4b.

5c6c7c3d4d5d5d7d4b4b5b6b7b

I got to ready finally on the 12th draw, and I didn’t have such a good wait so I decided not to reach even though it was pretty much a final shape for the hand. Without the reach the other players could play a little looser and it was only a matter of time before one of them threw my winner. Kawai threw it on the 15th draw and I had a nice 12,000 point start in that first game.

So actually, I was on the road to finishing positive in all 4 games but went for it in strange situations which cost me at least another 20 points. Given my effort to play tighter, I need to remember to continue to play tight ALL the time. Alright not quite so ALL the time, but definitelly when I have a hand that’s not worth fighting for.

Wonder if I can remember that all the way to Champion’s League tonight.

About

Gartheeeism originated somewhere in the latter half of the 20th century and is distinguishable from the other great monotheisms by its first commandment: keep all days holy by not working on any of them. Sometimes not-work falls into the Mahjong category, playing tournaments or especially Konami’s Mahjong Fight Club video arcade game. Sometimes it takes the form of acting or posing for Japanese TV dramas or baseball uniform catalogs. It also sometimes includes a fair amount of poker, online or otherwise. Finally, there’s the occasional English lesson, often accompanied by a beer or three. Garthe follows in the footsteps of greats like John Smith and L. Ron Hubbard who knew that there’s no better business than having your own religion.
