Ξ March 9th, 2010 | → 0 Comments | ∇ garthe nelson |

My other last hand

Ξ March 8th, 2010 | → 0 Comments | ∇ garthe nelson |

I was a little more successful on my last hand of the second qualifying round, if not also a LOT more ridiculous.(次のポストはこの話日本語で頑張る。。。)

Going into the game I had 37 points and after 3 games the border for continuing was around 10. With an effective placing bonus of 45 5 -15 -35 I couldn’t afford a 4th place but I’d probably be OK with a small 3rd place.

With that as my goal for the game, right off the bat as dealer for the first hand, another player drew 4000/2000 to drop me straight into last place. The whole game was pretty much like that. I threw one hand for 1600 and was drawn out on all the rest. By the last hand I was in 4th behind the last dealer by 2800. I needed a 3200 point hand, to draw 2600 or take it from the dealer, or to finish the hand ready and the dealer not. Oh yeah, or someone drawing 3000/6000 would do the trick too, but hard to count on that.

In the middle of the hand, the second place player asked to see everyone’s score sheets to see what kind of points we were all shooting for and it turned out The Dealer (TD), was in exactly the same boat as I, he needed a 3rd place too. Interestingly enough, the 2nd Place Guy (SPG) and the girl in first (GIF) were also in similar boats, they both needed first place finishes to move on and she was about 4500 points ahead of him. So at least 3 of us are in go-for-it mode when I open up my last hand to see this:

TD’s first discard was 9b and dora was 6b. I had some time to think about what to do because people were busy confirming everyone’s current point status after he threw his first discard so I……….chi-ed. My option here seems only to be the half flush, and with the West already concealed in my hand, I pretty much have 2600 guaranteed if I can get another South, White or Green Dragon. I’m either going to get it as a triple which gives me at least 3900 or it’s my head which gives me an extra 2 basic points moving me up to the 50 bracket and a total of 3200 points for the hand. I’m already planning on konging West if it comes out to get the extra basic points and maybe even get another dora. Also counting on a probable North triple or pung, I’m counting quite a few eggs here before they’ve even been laid, much less hatched.

Immediately after that SPG threw North and a couple rounds later the dealer threw West which I konged. So after 4 drawing rounds I had executed the first part of my plan flawlessly to now have this left in my hand.

WTF? It looks more like a discard pile! People started throwing Souths so I was lucky to draw a couple Easts in a row which then had me wondering which tile I hold as my “naked” wait if I have to pon East too. Lucky for me I drew the last 5b so I was waiting for 3b6b and SPG had already thrown dora as his second discard! One more time, please! Except TD and SPG started throwing every bamboo EXCEPT those two. GIF was pretty much folding as hard as she could, throwing nothing but tiles that were clearly safe safe safe. Then SPG reached! Now I don’t even need to worry about who to win from because his reach stick gives me enough points no matter who throws it! No worries though, the next tile TD drew was dora, of no use to him, and knowing he needed to finish the hand at least ready out it came. 5200 points for me and a safe 3rd place.

Wheeeeeeee!!!!

After the game GIF and I talked a bit about the hand and it was clearly all she could do to conceal her disdain for the success of such donkey play. They called her up in 22nd place and I started to worry because we were getting close to the border and I had 10 points less than she. Whew, “28th place, number 3, Gaasu-san” YES!!!!

On to the big time………

About

Gartheeeism originated somewhere in the latter half of the 20th century and is distinguishable from the other great monotheisms by its first commandment: keep all days holy by not working on any of them. Sometimes not-work falls into the Mahjong category, playing tournaments or especially Konami’s Mahjong Fight Club video arcade game. Sometimes it takes the form of acting or posing for Japanese TV dramas or baseball uniform catalogs. It also sometimes includes a fair amount of poker, online or otherwise. Finally, there’s the occasional English lesson, often accompanied by a beer or three. Garthe follows in the footsteps of greats like John Smith and L. Ron Hubbard who knew that there’s no better business than having your own religion.
